Journal Entry #7
Best Character Written
As of last entry, I spoke about the best story written anime and now I want to talk about the best character written and that is also from the same story, his name is Eren Yeager. Eren is one of the best character in my opinion because of his personality, back story, motivation, and the switch from protaganist to antagonist throughout the show. He is not just protagonist, he is also an antagonist, anti-hero, anti-villain, hero, villain, and hero. He is just everything in the Attack on Titan story. Eren was your normal protaganist that lived a normal life behind the walls until one day, their enemy aka titans has striked the wall, breaking it down and killing his mother and many other civilians. Eren then swore to destroy all titans in the world to avenge his mother. Later he finds out that he also has titan powers and became one the very enemy he swore to destroy. Eren becomes humanities only hope to protect the walls and kill all the titans that are remaining beyond the island. Until he learned about the truth of the titans, his father, other countries, and himself as well, he started to switch up. Eren is a such a complex character to be written because he is not your average villain that kills with mercy. Eren seeks freedom and peace for his friends, but the power he holds allows him to be able to see the past, present and the future which makes him a trapped bird in a cage because he cannot escape the future or past no matter what he does. He eventually becomes a slave to freedom and commits genocide wiping out 80% of humanity to allow his friends to defeat him so they are seen as the hero of the story. Eren never had the freedom to be who he is as he was destined to become someone else which is the villain. In the end, death was his freedom and he was finally released from the cage he was trapped in all along. Afterall, if the story was so well written, of course the character would be so well written as well. Attack on Titan will forever be one of my top animes to watch.
